Vamos espreitar?

When the answer was “yes!”, how did you imagine your day?

I saw Quinta de Sant’ Ana on Pinterest right around the time we got engaged, and knew right away it was the place. Wedding plans got put on hold for a year as we went backpacking around Asia, but as soon as we got home I contacted the venue and straight away booked it. We didn’t look at any other venues as I couldn’t imagine it taking place anywhere else. The lush green vineyards, vibrant yellow walls, white doves and endless wine were hard to beat – luckily Nuno agreed!

Did you feel prepared or was it a nerve-racking journey?

I was quite relaxed throughout the planning process. Ann and everyone was wonderful and made everything super easy. There was a lot of updating and sending back and fourth of excel spreadsheets, but it all came together smoothly.

At what point in the wedding planning did you feet, “this is for real”?

I always felt I was planning someone else’s wedding up until the night before, when all our friends and family arrived together in the beach town of Ericeira – where we decided to be based. We were lucky to have those who love us come from all over the world, so it was a surreal experience to finally see everyone’s faces all in one place!

Is the result true to the initial ideas or is it very different? Did you have any help?

We didn’t go into the planning with any specific vision, but the end result was better than we could have every imagined. So many people remarked that it was the best wedding they had every attended. From the celebratory chapel bells, wine tasting in the cellar, exceptional waiter service and beautiful organic floral arrangements, it was all a dream come true.

What was fundamental to you? And unimportant?

It was really important to me that everyone had a great time – so an open bar was necessary! Coming from two different cultures, there were some differences in expectations for the day – but the food and drinks were always priority for us both. We were not so worried about a particular colour scheme or theme and chose mostly neutral/natural tones to keep things clean and fresh. It was important for me to have soft candle lighting during the dinner, which the venue achieved well with interwoven greenery.

What was the easiest? And what was more difficult?

Deciding we wanted to get married in Portugal was definitely the easiest decision, as we couldn’t chance the London rain and you can’t beat the Portuguese sun! However, on the day, an unexpected heat wave and 40 degree temperature made the outside ceremony quite a challenge…!

What was the sentimental peak of your day?

The speeches were undeniably the peak for me. It was the first moment I felt as though I was able to sit back, relax and take in the day. My father passed away when I was very young and my brother made an incredible speech in his place – acknowledging the fact that we had chosen to marry on father’s day. The Portuguese do not traditionally do speeches like we do in England, and as a surprise my brother did half of the speech in Portuguese. It was such an amazing moment that bridged the two cultures – everyone was crying, standing and clapping by the end!

And the peak of fun?

I really loved the cake cutting. The fireworks and champagne really signified the start of the party!

Now that it has happened, would you change anything?

I would ensure to make more time for myself in the lead up to the day. It is so important to be relaxed and calm so you can really take everything in and remember it all. Our favours could have been better – we left it until the last minute, and although the tequilla bottles were a hit, due to the extreme heat all of the chocolate Portuguese tiles melted and turned into liquid!

Some words of advice for upcoming brides …

Don’t stress over the small details!! Someone gave this advice to me before the day, and having now gone through the experience I couldn’t agree more. The day flies by and you will hardly notice them – and neither will anyone else!
